NDOT UAS Drone Program Development

Led the technological development and deployment of Nebraska DOT's UAS Drone program, creating a web application for flight planning and data processing that saved the state over $650K.

Role

Technical Lead & Lead Pilot

Tech Stack

Next.js, .NET Core API, SQL Server, Azure, GIS, Drone Technology

The Challenge

Nebraska Department of Transportation needed to establish a UAS (Drone) program for aerial surveys and infrastructure inspection. Traditional surveying methods were expensive and time-consuming. The department lacked internal drone expertise and needed a complete solution—from flight planning and data capture to processing and storage—that could operate efficiently within Azure cloud environments.

The Approach

Led a 4-member team in both technical development and operational execution. Built a UAS planning and data processing web application using Next.js for the frontend, .NET Core API for backend services, and SQL Server for data persistence. Designed the system to operate within Azure cloud environments for scalability and integration with existing DOT infrastructure. Served as lead pilot and data processing engineer, personally orchestrating aerial surveys.

The Outcome

Saved the state of Nebraska over $650,000 through cost-effective aerial surveys compared to traditional methods. Established a fully operational drone program with supporting technology infrastructure. Cloud data management tools enhanced data accuracy and storage capabilities. The program continues to deliver value for infrastructure inspection, emergency response, and planning operations.
